Skull . . .

Just finished my 3rd Term Final Examination. While preparing, once again I felt the dire need for good (free) figures and photographs of bones and visceras and explanations of various topics.

So, I decided to start contributing myself, with the very little that I have and I know - hoping for others to join . . . Someday, we might have a pretty good online (free) resource center for all medical students & professionals . . .

A few of the skull photographs I recently took and uploaded at Flickr

Basal Gangl

Basal ganglia is the collection of masses of gray matter situated within the cerebral hemispheres. It includes Corpus striatum (i.e. Caudate nucleus & Lentiform nucleus), Amygdaloid nucleus & the Claustrum.
But is that all ?

The confusing fact is that, according to Snell's Neuroanatomy (5th ed./p.316):
"The Subthalamic nuclei, the Substantia nigra & the red nucleus are functionally closely related to the basal nuclei, but they should not be included with them."

Whereas, Guyton (10th ed./p.656) considers the Subthalamic nuclei & the Substantia nigra part of the basal ganglia; although they do not mention anything about Claustrum.

Again, according to Snell's Neuroanatomy (5th ed./p.319):
"The function of the claustrum is unknown."

Bad, very bad.

First "Visit" !

A very interesting "thing" happened just an hour ago...

I was preparing for an exam I have tomorrow. It was a busy evening and I was way behind my schedule of studies.
Suddenly, the door bell rang @ 11:40 PM, something not very common for us. My brothrer answered the door. I peeped from behind and found out that it was our neighbour from the ground floor apartment. A person was ill and with history of hypertension, she was looking for a medical student (that's me) at least to check the B/P of that person.

Accordingly I went, checked the B/P and found out that his B/P was actually 105/60. I came to know that he has just started receiving medication for treatment of hypertension (150/10) from yesterday, which might be a cause.
But I didn't know much about the medicine he has been prescribed from my 2nd year knowledge and informed them so. Rather, I advised them to let him have his dinner (expecting an obvious rise after meal) adding that I would be visiting again to check the status in half an hour.

After half an hour, things were better. He was talking now and measured 115/80 (left hand) and 120/75 (right hand). We all were a bit relieved. They asked me to check the B/P again before I leave for medical college tomorrow morning, and I assured. I asked them to consult their physician tomorrow and report the incident.

Before I left, I was stunned as they offered me "fees" for my service. I tried to explain that I am just a student and not a doctor, plus there wasn't much that I actually did, and surely you don't help your neighbours for "fees".... but all in vain. I was literally forced to accept about 1000 bucks (that's huge too!)...
When I returned home and shared what happened, my brother gave a big lough ! My mother looked at me for a moment and said "How could u accept?"
I asked to myself "How could I ..."

It was quite an experience !

I'm starting to love what I'm in for the ride of my life...
NOT for the money though! It's the look. It's just the look you see in peoples' eyes... when they're tensed, and again when they're relieved... when they're helpless, and again when they're assured... it's hard to describe the change.

I'm starting to feel the pressure too... so much left to know, and so little time in hand...
I wish I could learn faster...

Welcome!

This is my first blog here / anywhere else... a bit worried about how it might go...

I think it's better to go straight to the point.
The basic idea of blogging was not clear to me for quite some time, until i came to have read some of the very good ones...

That gave me the idea of creating one of my own.

The obvious questions were, how to blog ? what to blog ? for whom ?
First one - how, was pretty easy to solve. blogger was the answer.

Second & third questions - what to blog & for whom - were not so easy to solve. using blog as an online 'personal' diary might be a good idea for many, but certainly not for me... i'm neither a celebrity, nor a good writer of any sort to make people interested in reading what i do everyday...

So ? The only idea amongst many following that seemed a little feasible to me was to potray the actual life of a medical student, as i am one ... and only being one can tell you how radically it can effect your life and values... how painful & rewarding it might seem on the same hand...

And i have a dintinct feeling that it might seem interesting as a topic to some (at least), since i myself used to have lots of speculative ideas about medical life and doctors... those took only 6 months to change...

Lets see how well i have guessed...
